The English language has become important to the present development goals of Colombia and its progress towards bilingualism. Therefore, it is a fundamental part in our school curriculum and the development of your children. The English Department looks to nurture the seeds of knowledge and wisdom in these children through the teaching of not only listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar but also the understanding and interpreting of literature from around the world. Here at Newman School we look to incorporate many forms of English and ways to teach it to your children. First of all, we have our extensive reading books which begin in third grade and continue right up to the eleventh graders. These extensive reading books provide the children with chance to build their vocabulary, open their eyes to different kinds of literature and broadening their horizons. Furthermore, our collection of English books in the library keeps growing and growing to create more possibilities at the children’s grasp. Second, we have our special guests who enter the school by invitation to speak to or perform for your children. The idea is to create an “English everywhere” environment. Finally, we also look to use extra materials such as the internet, plays, speeches, debates, multimedia and E-pals. The internet and E-pals are used effectively to connect your students to other classrooms around the world. It is an activity like having a native English teacher in every class as the students can talk and relate to English speaking students of the same age all around the world.
The English department firmly believes in our school motto of being “citizens of the world”. Through our combined programmes we look to start your children on that process of achieving this goal.
